Currently the City of Sacramento maintains approximately 38,000 street lights within the city limits. This includes light varieties from the newest street lights installed in North Natomas to the lights in the older parts of the city that were installed over 80 years ago. The majority of lights in the city are High Pressure Sodium (the orange looking lights) but older lights still have the Mercury Vapor lamps (white light). Mercury Vapor parts will no longer be available as of 2008 so we are looking into other types of lighting to replace the white light including inductive lighting and Metal Halide.
City crews will respond to street light complaint calls in three days or less. We have initiated a program to proactively re-lamp the street lights once every eight years for a total of over 4,700 lights each year. If you have a Street Lighting issue please don't hesitate to call the number listed below.
The Traffic Signal & Lighting section also performs Underground Service Alert (USA) for all Traffic Signal, Street Lighting and Fiber Optic cable and conduit (except for utility fiber). We locate and mark these underground facilities on an average of 25,000 times a year at no charge to the customer.
