Candidate Statements - November 2, 2010 General Run Off Election

Patrick Kennedy Image

District 5 - Patrick Kennedy

For the past 20 years I’ve been committed to our neighborhoods. I served as President of the Oak Park Neighborhood Improvement Association and later helped start the Hollywood Park Neighborhood Association. Improving and protecting our communities was my focus. Working with community leaders we cleaned up our parks and fought for safer streets. I’m proud that our Sacramento Police Officers are supporting me because they trust my commitment to more police on the streets and keeping our communities safe. I’m proud that our Firefighters are supporting me because I have pledged to keep our fire stations open and fully staffed.

I’m concerned the economic downturn will continue to hurt our quality of life and result in fewer services. We can do better. I have called for increased audits and ensuring that we fully fund our core services before we give more subsidies to downtown developers.

I was born and raised in Sacramento. My wife, Judy, and I rented our first home in Oak Park almost 20 years ago. We’ve raised our family here. Today I serve as Vice President on the Sacramento City School Board. I would be honored to have your support for City Council. Learn more at www.patrick-kennedy.com.

I am running for City Council in a way that demonstrates how I think government should work. If we talk about issues together, we can solve problems together. I've walked to over 20,000 homes and have had over 8,000 individual discussions.  My campaign signs feature a telephone number for weekly "Neighborhood Conversations."  Many of you have joined our conference calls.  If you haven't, please try. Just call 209-4354, extension 45456, on any Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

We're all tired of a political system that talks at us instead of listening to us.  If we build strong neighborhoods, strong community involvement, and strong citizen engagement we'll change things at City Hall. We deserve a City Council that isn’t beholden to development interests, money interests, or special interests.

I managed the Sacramento Food Bank, served as assistant Secretary of Education, and owned and ran my own small business for 18 years. The Sacramento Bee endorsed me, saying my “combination of business and government experience… would be an asset on the Council.”

If you would like to discuss any issue with me personally, please reach me at 916-752-3609 or by email at jay@jayforcitycouncil.com. Thank You.

District 7 - Darrell Fong

I won’t accept a salary for my work on Council until Sacramento is out of financial trouble. I had the honor of 30 years serving our neighborhoods as a police officer, anti-gang task force leader, and Police Captain.  I want to continue my service to the city where I’ve lived my whole life.

City Hall needs to change.  It’s become a mini-State Capitol.

Fighting like cats and dogs.  Sacramento needs ordinary people like you and me, political “outsiders” to step up and take responsibility for making our city a better place.

My passion is for helping kids.  I’ve seen too many young people join gangs because we don’t give them the right alternatives.  10% of all high school dropouts end up in prison.

After-school, recreation, counseling, tutoring and job programs for young people make all the difference. I believe there’s money being wasted and that finding it and spending on kids is the most important thing we can do.

I’m proud that Sacramento’s Teachers and Sheriff John McGinness endorse me for City Council.  I’ll work hard to represent Greenhaven, the Pocket and Valley Hi.  I’d appreciate your consideration when you vote.

As your Sacramento City Councilmember my priorities will be clear:  Creating quality jobs, supporting local business and investing in our youth.  I will bring a new voice, new ideas, and new leadership to City Hall.  And I will never forget who I work for - you.

With a Masters in Business Administration I have provided innovative leadership to companies for two decades. Effective leadership is more than just what you are paid to do; it is also about what you are willing to give to your community.

I proudly served Sacramento as a member of the Policy Planning Commission. My work with non-profits has given hundreds of local students the opportunity to attend college or pursue a career by funding scholarships, and youth and crime prevention programs.

My wife and I love raising our kids in this great community, with resourceful families and strong neighborhoods, but for too long Pocket/Greenhaven and Valley Hi have settled for less while other areas receive attention and resources.  As your councilmember I will address the issues that affect our everyday life and bring resources back to our neighborhoods.

I would be honored to have your support.  Together, we will move Sacramento forward.
